Day 1

So, today was day 1 of VBS and since I am lead teacher for my class this year, I thought I better get there pretty early. We left the house at 7:40, went to the donut store, (my kids will not have a single healthy breakfast this week) started down the road, turned around due to construction, I listened to a lot of my favorite songs on KSBJ (pretty sure that was a little something from God because it put me in a very good pre-VBS mood; Thank you Lord!), pulled into the church parking lot, carefully drove through parking lot since there were mommies and children walking in, pulled up to the stop sign at one of the intersections of my church parking lot, and the lady behind me honked at me.

Seriously. To which Emma responded, "Who is that idiot honking at you, mommy?"
Does anyone else besides me think that is weird? (You're thinking, "Which part - the honking part or the part where your 5-year old called another driver an idiot?!" Stick with me...I'm getting there.) I looked in the rear view. I do not know her. Should I have gotten out and introduced myself? I kind of wish I had. I could have thanked her for giving me something to blog about. If I knew how, I would insert one of those yellow smiley faces right here.
Does anyone else besides me think maybe I should stop using the word idiot while I drive? You thought I was just going to slide right by that little fact, didn't you? Nope. For some reason, Emma calling other drivers "idiots" while we are on the freeway or out and about in our community hasn't bothered me. But, my 5 year old calling one of my sisters at church an idiot sounded a tad disrespectful, to say the least. It made me think about the parenting material we've been studying in our adult Sunday School class. At that moment, I could hear Chip Ingraham's voice inside my head saying, "They are going to learn more from what you do than what you say." Unfortunately, in this instance, Emma has learned from what I've done and said! (Sigh) Dangit. I don't know why my sister at church was honking and moreover, although I thought it was weird, it didn't bother me.
Not using the word idiot would demonstrate self control and grace. My kids would be better served by that example than the former.
Well, bloggy friends, those are my thoughts for this day. I wonder what I will learn at VBS tomorrow!
