Girl talk

Today when I picked my Allison up from school, she was telling me about one of her new friends at her new school. And this new friend is a boy. I think she fairly likes him, but she never says that. But, they seem to find a way to play together during at least part of recess almost every day. They are in the same class and she has had nothing but sweet things to say about this little man.

He has gone out of his way to make Allison feel like a part of her new school. He sounds thoughtful and friendly. But, at the end of the day...he is a boy. I have to be honest and say I really don't care for Allison pretending to have a boyfriend or getting into any of this boy-craziness that starts younger and younger with each new crop of kids.

Allison is such a sensitive little girl and she truly wants to please her parents. So, there's constantly this balancing act of steering her, but wanting her to make her own choices as well.

So, today, she's telling me this story about how she got her feelings a little hurt on the playground and she went off by herself to swing. (very dramatic) And she was feeling bad and all of a sudden here comes this little boy who is her friend. And she said he started pushing her on the swings. He said something that cheered her up and then she smiled real big and said to me, "Mama, I think God made him special."

God made him special. She could not have been more sincere. If this is how she is going to talk to me about boys, I can handle that.

Special indeed.
