Here are the best 10 things to happen in VBS so far:
10. No one honked at me in the parking lot at church. Praise you, Lord.
9. We will stop daily for donuts, which will be the girls' morning nourishment. We are 2 for 2 so far. My nourishment is a diet dr. pepper, until....
8. Teacher snack time, which so far has been really yummy!
7. My friend Paula told me yesterday we should meet up for snack time. I thought that was so cute. Normally we would try to meet up for lunch, but this week, we'll meet for snack time. The kindergarten teacher in me just wanted to hug her neck.
6. Allison is now in her cousin, Olivia's, VBS class, thanks to a friend at the registration desk. And as far as Allison is concerned, all is right with the world.
5. Our VBS theme (and most SBC churches) is Saddle Ridge Ranch and on behalf of Texas, I would like to thank Lifeway for that. It's like vbs, rodeo style.
4. Our church doesn't make us go outside for rec. Oh Lord, how marvelous are your works and how hot your Texas summers.
3. I'm never more proud of my church than I am the week of VBS.
2. I am finally learning the lay out of our new children's building and find myself walking in circles less and less.
1. The absolute best thing to happen in VBS so far has to be Shelley Fine's lesson on creation yesterday. She blew me away with a truth that I found so profoundly deep, and yet simple enough that kids could get it. And what I love and respect about Shelley so much is that she is not afraid to give deep truth to 6 year olds. She could just talk about how God made man and woman and how they were different from the animals and how special we are because we can have a relationship with God and that could have been it. And all of that is true, but here is the thing she said that blessed me, and made me thankful my daughter was getting to hear it:
She asked the kids what they noticed about the way God created the earth and the animals and the plants. One of our students said, "He spoke."
Shelley said, "You're right. He just spoke it and it happened. But, not so with man. No, with man, God made up His mind it would be different. God used his words AND He bent down and used His hands to form man out of clay and then used his very breath to breathe life into Him. God was hands on when it came to His most precious creation, man. You are wonderfully made. You are SOOOOO wonderfully made that God knew your name before your parents even knew your name." And she rock and rolled from there. Bless God, the woman is a rock star of a Children's Bible teacher. I love watching people like that in action. They are so inspiring and make me so thankful for the way God has gifted us each so uniquely.
And I watched 17 six-year olds sit captivated by Truth. And that is why Jesus said, "suffer not."
