Little conversation with Emma

Conversation with Emma while we were driving to the paint store today:

Emma: Hey mama, see that tree up ahead? It's a tree just like ours, but bigger. You know, the one in the front yard? Like that one.

Me: Oh, Emma, you're right. That is like ours. It's an ornamental pear.

Emma: Yeah, they're the same. But ours is smaller.

Me: Emma, that's good observation on your part. A lot of kids your age wouldn't take the time to notice that. For one, because our tree is quite a bit smaller than the one you just saw. For another, because the tree you just saw has a lot more green leaves right now than ours does. You have a sharp eye.

Emma: What? It's not that hard.

Me: No, but I'm just saying, I don't think I noticed types of trees when I was your age. I just saw trees and didn't think anything else of them. I just wanted to tell you I think you have a good eye for detail. You saw the leaves and the bark and other details about the tree and decided it was like ours at home. Good job.

Emma: Oh. Well, thank you for the compliment.

- pause -

I am awesome. (major deep, mischevious giggle.)

Me: You're also crazy. (major deep, mischevious giggle.)
